General Character Guidelines

Ability Scores

Your in-character actions should reflect your chosen ability scores. For example, any intelligence score lower than 9 means you cannot speak properly (we see a lot of eloquent half-orcs with int scores of 8 or lower).

Another fine example: a low charisma score would likely make you uninspiring, a poor leader, less concerned with personal hygiene, and simply not as likeable as someone with a higher charisma score.

Your role-playing should reflect your character's ability scores as best as possible.

Alignment

Your in-character actions should reflect your alignment, if they do not, a DM can and will adjust your alignment accordingly. A change in alignment may have serious in-character consequences for many classes.

In any case, alignment is an important factor in determining your character's actions as well as her general philosophy.

Character Race

The various races will behave uniquely. You are encouraged to research stereotypical racial behaviour, and to play your character accordingly.

In-character racism is encouraged. The Forgotten Realms is a world populated by many different races, and is rife with racial tension. Many races have hundreds if not thousands of years of enmity between them. It is well known that all elves and dwarves despise those of orcish (thus half-orcish) descent. In fact, most races react negatively toward half-orcs.

Keep in mind that someone acting prejudicially toward your character's race is role-playing the part, and that it is not in any way a personal insult. We in no way condone real life racism, but this is not real life, it is ony a game.

Class Specific Rules

Barbarians

The Barbarian class is not a profession, it is who your character is - it is a way of life. A character does not become a barbarian, he is born one.

You may not take barbarian levels unless every preceding level was of the barbarian class. This means that if you wish to play a barbarian, you must take the barbarian class at first level. If at any subsequent time you take a level in another class, you may no longer proceed as a barbarian - civilization has laid its touch upon you.

A DM will remove any illegal barbarian level(s), and you will have to choose another class when the DM returns the levels.

A barbarian must never be of any Lawful alignment. If at any time the barbarian becomes lawful, he will no longer be allowed to take barbarian levels.

Clerics

Clerics must be of an alignment matching that which is required of clerics of their deity. If the cleric's alignment changes to an alignment contradictory to the teachings of her deity, a DM will tell you that you are no longer allowed to use your clerical powers or spells, and will give you a token which will strip your powers.

Clerical domains should be chosen from those that are granted by the cleric's specific deity.

Druids

No character with druid levels will be allowed to wear any heavy armor, unless it is wooden armor enhanced by the Ironwood spell (Ironwood armors are available in game).

All druids must be of one of the Neutral alignments. Any drift out of a Neutral alignment will make you ineligible to advance as a druid. A DM will tell you that you are no longer allowed to use your druidic powers or spells, and will give you a token which will strip your powers.

Game Funtion Change: The druid will be unable to keep a panther or a boar until he has reached level 3, and will be unable to keep a dire wolf or bear until he has reached level 6.

Monks

Monks must be Lawfully aligned. If at any time the monk becomes non-Lawful, he will no longer be allowed to take monk levels.

Paladins

Paladins must have an alignment of Lawful Good. If at any time the paladin becomes non-Lawful Good he will be considered to have fallen from the grace of his god, and he will no longer be allowed to take paladin levels. A DM will also tell you that you are no longer allowed to use your paladin powers or spells, and will give you a token which will strip your powers.

Rangers

Rangers should be of an alignment appropriate to the teachings of their deity or spirituality. Any ranger that falls from such an alignment will be told by a DM that he/she no longer be allowed to use their divinely given ranger spells, and will give you a token which will strip your powers.

Game Funtion Change: The ranger will be unable to keep a panther or a boar until he has reached level 9, and will be unable to keep a dire wolf or bear until he has reached level 12.

Prestige Classes

You will not be allowed to take prestige class levels without permission from a DM.

No one will be allowed to become a Red Dragon Disciple.

Harassment

There is a fine line between playing a PC that is crude, and harassing other players. This server is open to the public, and will accept sincere, mature role-playing behavior; however, if other players complain that you are harassing them, the situation will be investigated. If a DM determines you are being harassing or troublesome, you will be banned by cd key, player ID, and IP address (which could affect the ability of anyone else sharing your CD or internet connection to join the server).

Sexual Harassment

We do not tolerate any sexually harassing behaviour on this server, and you will be banned for such behaviour, plain and simple.

The Depiction of Sexual Violence

We cannot allow depictions of sexual violence, no matter how small, on either our forums, or on our server.

We would like to make it known that as a matter of policy, our DM team will absolutely never depict events of sexual violence, and will never ask any player to participate in events of sexual violence. We hold ourselves up as an example to follow where this is concerned, and expect all players to follow that example.

It does not matter how "realistic" it may seem to depict such things, we are drawing a clear line here. The server and these forums are open to the public, and underage (sometimes far under age) children play here.

Please keep these things in mind for the good of the community.

Additionally, we also wish to communicate that, in general, specific role-playing actions performed by NPCs are the domain of the DMs, and while some actions are automated by the game (fighting and killing) and attitudes are at times implied by the nature of a given creature, placing certain detailed actions and personalities upon any NPCs must remain within the DM's purview.

Cheats and Exploits

A Note on "Twinking"

Dropping items and/or gold from one of your characters, then re-logging with a different character and picking them up is known as twinking. We consider this cheat to be unfair to all other players, and to be a serious offense against both the server rules and decent behaviour. Twinking will result in you being immediately banned, period.

Passing items to other players to hold for one of your other characters is also considered twinking.

Using one of your characters to loot the corpse of another of your dead characters will also be considered twinking. There is typically no in character reason your new character would know anything about your old, dead character. Never use one character to loot your own drop bag belonging to another of your characters; never transfer items in any way between your characters.

On Logging to Cheat Death

If you die, or will likely die, please accept that fact and go through the proper channels to be brought back to life. If a DM witnesses you logging off the server to cheat death, you will be sent directly to the Fugue Plane upon your return.

This is a serious breach of role-playing behaviour, as there is no in-character way to simply disappear to avoid death.

The Use of Exploits

The use of any exploits or bugs that allow you to duplicate items, acquire gold, recover used spells and feats without resting, gain xp, or escape death is strictly prohibited. Cheating is never fair to the honest members of the community, and will not be tolerated here. If you use exploits, expect to be caught, and expect to be banned.

We all know the creature AI cannot measure up to human intelligence. If you commonly exploit the faults in the AI, a DM may drop extra monsters, and/or assume control of the monsters. Expect things to get very rough if you are a regular AI exploiter. We believe most people know when they are intentionally using an exploit.

Some of the common AI exploits include, but are not limited to:

"Tethering" or "Kiting" - Attracting one or two creatures, then running away from those creatures so they chase you, and firing arrows "from your backside" the entire time until they have been killed. This is a very common solo powergaming technique, and is typically accomplished by running in a small circle within one area.

"Going Fishing" - This is very common in caves and around bends in passageways. The technique involves moving slowly into the perception range of one or two monsters, then running around a corner and waiting for them to catch up. A skilled fisherman can clear a very difficult cave alone by attracting only a couple of enemies at once, even though there are a dozen creatures just behind the few that chase the PC, and in reality, would accompany their "less intelligent" monster buddies in the chase.

The Transition Exploit - When being chased, it is possible to trick a creature into giving up it's pursuit by hitting a transition, then running back into the area or off to the side as the PC avatar fades. This techniue fools the AI into thinking you have changed direction, and tells the monster to chase you in the new direction, even though you are really travelling through the transition. There is just simply no reason a creature should not be able to follow you through the mouth of that cave, or over that imaginary line in the road. This is another favored technique of the solo powergamer.

Player versus Player and Player Killing

Is PvP and PK allowed?

In a word, NO. Player Versus Player combat and Player Killing is not allowed and is grounds for immediate banning by cd key, which means anyone using your play cd will not be allowed on this server. We also reserve the right to ban you by IP address. Be responsible if you share a play cd or internet connection with another person. Unauthorized PvP and PK is disrespectful to the other players and to the server. If your goal is simply to cause trouble with other players, go elsewhere, you will be banned from this server.

The only exceptions to this rule are as follows:

1) A DM may approve player requested PvP between two players who have mutually consented to combatting each other, and who understand the risks to their characters. This is usually done as part of a storyline (let's say a duel or a long running enmity by way of example), and the DM must remain present to supervise the entire time.

2) A DM, for any number of reasons, may declare a specific PC kill-on-sight, or KOS. This is typically done through an NPC, such as a guard, speaking to individual players in a given town. This type of situation may even be developed so as to allow a reward to the PC returning the wanted PC's body to the NPC issuing the declaration. In any case, the DM will monitor the situation closely.

3) A DM, for any number of reasons, may declare PvP/PK between two or more characters. All characters involved will be informed of the details of the situation. The DM may set any time limit he wishes on this scenario, that is, he may state that legal PvP/PK permission ends at a specific time, on a specific day.

What if I am attacked and/or killed by a player?

If you are attacked, you may of course defend yourself. You should also contact a DM to report the situation as soon as possible. You should also make a screen capture showing the attack your combat history window; pressing the 'print screen' key will take a screen capture. We will need the exact character name and, if possible, the offending player's ID to take appropriate action.

If a DM is not available right away, you may report the incident in the General Discussions of our forums.

Subraces

Allowed Subraces

We allow players to portray any of the following subraces; these are also the only subraces supported by the subrace system:

-Shield Dwarf (FR Default Dwarf)
-Gold Dwarf
-Moon Elf (FR Default Elf)
-Sun Elf
-Wild Elf
-Wood Elf
-Rock Gnome (FR Default Gnome)
-Ghostwise Halfling
-Lightfoot Halfling (FR Default Halfling)
-Strongheart Halfling

Disallowed Subraces

There are many subraces we do not allow as PC races on this server. At this time, the following sub-races are disallowed:

-Aasimar
-Avariel
-Deep Gnome (Svirfneblin)
-Drow
-Genasi (any type)
-Grey Dwarf (Duergar)
-Half-Celestial
-Half-Demon
-Half-Dragon
-Half-Drow
-Lycanthropes
-Tiefling
-Undead
-Any race that is of partly or wholly planar origin
-You may also not play children.

Note: Due to the mechanics of the game, you may still enter the name of a disallowed sub-race when creating your character and it will appear on your character sheet, but you will receive neither the modified ability scores nor the additional powers of that sub-race. The system will simply not acknowledge that you are one of those races. This does not mean you are allowed to pass yourself off as one of those races; we have taken out the functionality of these races, and we do not allow them to be role-played either. Therefore, as an example, if you make a drow character, what you will actually be making is a functionally ordinary elf with black skin, white hair, and an identity crisis. And, because you look like a drow, you will still be asked to recreate a legal character.

Why are these sub-races disallowed?

Among other reasons, each has been disallowed because of what they are, and/or the abilities they may possess. It is a decision made by the creators of this module so as to maintain a certain role-playing atmosphere, and to follow the overall vision for this campaign setting. A perfect example is the drow character. Most players will not role-play a drow in a manner that is true to the nature of one of the most hated and wickedly heinous races on the planet. The frequency of a good dark elf is in the order of one in millions at best, and he was Drizz't. It has been done folks.

Are there any exceptions to the rule limiting sub-races?

No, not at this time.

What will happen if I insist on playing a disallowed sub-race?

First, a DM will speak with you to determine whether or not you understand this rule, and will explain this rule to you if you were unaware, or did not understand. Please do not waste the time of the DM by lying and saying you were unaware of this rule when you were aware, or by arguing with the DM. Honesty is the best policy here, and will be appreciated by the DM.

Second, you will be given the option of creating a different character to play instead. In any case, a PC based on a disallowed sub-race will be deleted from the server vault. Any other legal characters you may have in your vault will not be affected by the removal of those based on disallowed sub-races.

What if I really push this sub-race thing?

If you are just being troublesome regarding this rule, you may be banned by cd key, player ID, and IP address.

PC Thieves and Picking Pockets

Both thieves and non-thieves should read what follows, as it applies to all concerned.

Picking the pockets of fellow PCs is strictly forbidden, and repeated offenses may result in a permanent ban.

Player Character thieves may attempt to steal from NPCs, as small amounts of gold and other trinkets have been placed on many of the NPCs throughout the world. Keep it in mind that if you are caught, that particular NPC will go hostile. You will have a few seconds to run before they chase and attack you, so you had better get moving. That single NPC will remain hostile for a short while. Also know that if the NPC attacks you, and you kill it, all guards and other defenders in that town will be hostile toward you. In fact, the entire town may be hostile, depending on who you killed. Simply put, choose your NPC mark carefully - it would be foolish to try to pick the pockets of a town guard or other prominent NPC.

You may only steal only one item from any given NPC per server reset. This is to maintain some level of realism; a person who notices something missing would be on high alert for some time thereafter. (But alas, the game cannot code for this, so we must restrict and role-play).

Out-of-Character Communication

Please limit out-of-character communication to private tells. While we recognize the very occasional and real need for OOC communication to the entire group (such as technical difficulties with your computer, going afk, etc.), the place for most OOC talk is via private tell - not in normal talk mode, not in whisper, and not in party chat. Virtually anything, through creative thinking, can be communicated through in-character comments. DMs may penalize you for constant OOC chat by removing xp from your character (we are looking for sincere dedicated role-players).

Dealing with the Dungeon Masters

Contacting a DM

If you need to speak with a DM, please use the DM Channel. If there is a DM online you will get a response, but please be patient as the DM may be busy at that time. Please do not enter your request in the DM Channel every other minute (a good rule of thumb is to wait ten minutes between attempts). A pestered DM is an unhappy DM.

Requests by players to become a DM

We do not entertain requests by players asking to become a DM on this server. We look for individuals who display good role-playing skills, an appreciation of community, a high level of creativity, emotional stability, and an understanding of the larger picture with regard to the overall campaign. We will contact you directly if we feel you would fit in well as a DM on this server. Please do not ask the DMs if you can also be a DM.

Please Respect the DMs

A DM may endure a staggering number of tells in the DM channel at any given moment. Please be patient when dealing with any DM, he or she may be carrying on conversations with four or five other players in addition to yourself, all while attempting to run a quest.

Please limit your communications in the DM channel to matters of the utmost importance. Ask the DM if he or she has time to speak with you, and expect that they may not.

The DMs put a great deal of effort into their in game activities, all with the aim to make the world a better, more interesting place to play. Please do not sass any DM, be respectful, and you will receive respect. Repeatedly sassing a DM may earn you a warning, or get you banned for the current run of the server or even get you banned permanently.
